Pictograms – that is the name of the latest pictures of Agata Kosmala which she prepared exclusively for the exhibition at Na Solnym gallery. The name derives from the author’s fascination with colours and signs.
Colours are always of great importance to her; she uses them as a tellers of pictures, happenings and actions that are taking place while a colour is being spread and accumulated, or while it appears just to disappear in the very next move. These are the ways she plays with them.
The painting of Agata Kosmala is abstract. That is why some will perceive it as a system of artistic speech elements while the others will try to find traces of real world reminiscence, as the colours arrangements themselves make a kind of space, light, and spirit. Thus, indeed, in some works we may see landscape transposition or elements’ eruption; but I think that the direction of this series of paintings interpretation is set by the author herself and refers to the language of painting. Clashes of colours with a black sign – a trace of motion. Because the sign is black and derives from the second Kosmala’s fascination – japanese calligraphy, which she presented also in her previous paintings series, “Szelest” (“The Rustle”). Pictogram is drown with one single move. A calligrapher makes it unconsciously, after years of trainings. Here we have it as a painting sign; black, wide trace that comes from depths of intuition. In the foreground it seems to be a seal which opens or closes the painting and with deeper examination we just multiply the interpretations. The sign is tense and challenging. Does it mean something? What can it mean?
For the artists of lyrical abstract, who should be mentioned here, that were inspired by chinese and japanese calligraphy, by Tao and Zen philosophy, and by meditation and judo the signs of paintbrush were spirit’s speech and the canvas was a place when subconsciousness got consciousness. What is it for Agata Kosmala? I think that it may be searching, or maybe hesitation – should I draw the surrounding world or the inner one? Or maybe I could unite them? After all, the word “pictogram” encloses the opposites, since it means a sign, a symbol, but it derives from “pingere” which means to paint.

"The colours are what fascinates me in the pictures of Agata Kosmala, not only gold, the doubtless inclination of the artist, but also warm green, intriguing red, neon blue.Gazing into the space or its fragment made of such colours you easily forget the reality that surrounds you. You are stepping into the mysterious circle, unknown, in which the mystery and this what is visible become one. What is " The Mirror"? Where is "Over" and "Under"? How captivating can " The Jump" be and how gloomy " The Barbecue" is? There is no stability, everything is alive, changing, recreating itself again and again. While looking I become motionless and the canvas is encircling me, pulling into, sinking into my memory. "
